A little perspective – from the little guys.
As you’ve probably noticed, for some time now, the delivery of beer and wine has been legal in California and across most of the country. Spirits have not traditionally been permitted to do the same. With the emergence of COVID-19, new roadblocks to the purchasing and consumption of spirits have prompted a temporary change in the law regarding alcohol delivery in California. Because of COVID-19, and in order to allow for socially distanced transactions, California has made it provisionally legal for citizens over 21 to have spirits delivered or made available for pickup. It is always wonderful to hear some good news in the midst of a global pandemic. However, as always with new mandates and legislations, there are a few stipulations that must be respected – and we’re happy to do that.
The good news is that most of these rules are identical to the ones we all know and follow already when buying and drinking alcohol. Of course, sales to anyone under the age of 21 will not be permitted, and alcohol can never be purchased between the hours of 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM. You will find our tasting room pickup window open Wednesday – Sunday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.
One key difference, though, is that pickup and delivery are specifically limited to 2.25 liters of spirits or the equivalent of three (3) x 750ml bottles of spirits per person, per day. As a craft distillery we don’t have the logistical capabilities to take over our distribution entirely, nor do we want to! This dispensation simply allows us to sell the average customer a couple of bottles directly through us and support our family-run distillery during this global crisis.
If you are curious about finding more details on this change in regulation, please check the website for California’s Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. This is a government website that you can trust to provide accurate details. https://www.abc.ca.gov/delivery-of-alcoholic-beverages/
Also, interestingly, the California Artisanal Distiller’s Guild (CADG) is working with Rep. Skinner to make these shipping laws a permanent solution by introducing SB 220 Craft distillers: direct shipping – this bill will codify into the existing Type 74 Craft Distillers license the privilege of shipping product directly to consumers. The pertinent language mirrors that of the Winegrowers license and honestly, just makes sense.
With the basic knowledge laid out on California alcohol delivery laws, you can feel confident when you put in an order. The next step is to find a distillery!
